Overview
The Iron Wall Mercenary is the entry point for Mistfall Hunter. If you're new, start here. This build is extremely forgiving — you have high HP, multiple defensive cooldowns, and War Cry to make your whole team stronger.
The design philosophy: survive everything, give your teammates the space to do damage, and extract cleanly. You don't need to deal the most damage. You need to deal *enough* damage while absorbing everything the game throws at you.
Why Start With This
- Highest HP pool of any class by a large margin
- Multiple defensive cooldowns (Fortify, Shield Bash stagger, Ground Slam knockdown)
- War Cry benefits the whole team even if you personally do nothing else
- Forgiving mistakes — most other classes punish mechanical errors with death; the Mercenary punishes errors with less efficiency
Skill Priority
- Shield Bash — Stagger enemies out of attacks. Use reactively when an enemy winds up a heavy.
- Fortify — Your panic button. Activate when you're being burst. Reduces incoming damage significantly.
- War Cry — Buff the entire team's damage and defense. Use at the start of every fight.
- Ground Slam — Knockdown in a small AoE. Use to interrupt boss mechanics or crowd multiple enemies.
Basic Rotation
War Cry (pre-fight) → engage → Shield Bash (stagger heavies) → Ground Slam (crowd groups) → Fortify (when health drops below 50%) → repeat
Talent Notes
- Iron Fortress — Increases shield block value. Every blocked hit deals less damage.
- War Veteran — War Cry's duration and effect increased. Longer buffs mean more team damage.
- Unyielding — Cannot be knocked back while Fortify is active. Essential for boss fights.
- Battle Hardened — Passively reduces damage taken from the first hit in each fight. Your opener defense.
- Relentless — Reduces cooldowns when you take damage. The more you tank, the faster your skills come back.
- Adrenaline Rush — Increases movement speed and attack speed at low health. Clutch escape tool.
Affix Notes
- Tenacious — Maximum HP increase. The foundation of your tankiness.
- Resilient — Crowd control reduction. Being stunned while tanking is usually a wipe.
- Fortified — Flat damage reduction. Stacks with Fortify skill for extreme mitigation.
- Stoic — Auto-heal at low HP. Your passive second chance.
- Fervor — Scales with your constant attack rhythm. Gives passive penetration over time.
Tips for New Players
1. Always War Cry before the fight starts, not during.
2. Shield Bash is reactive — watch for enemy windup animations, bash during them.
3. Fortify is not a "I'm about to die" button — use it when you're at 50-60% HP, not 10%.
4. Ground Slam is your most valuable utility in boss fights — use it to interrupt slam mechanics.
5. Don't feel obligated to deal damage. Your job is to absorb and disrupt.
Transitioning Off This Build
Once you understand extraction loop timing, cooldown management, and basic combat reads, consider:
- Withered Knight if you want more aggressive, high-skill melee
- Shadowstrix if you prefer picking your fights
- Sorcerer if you want to deal damage from range
